8/17/2010-It is official! RI-CIE has won the Northeastern Economic Developers Association's (NEDA) Best Practice Award for "Program of the Year". NEDA, the leading economic development organization in the northeast since 1956, champions effective, innovative economic development practices. RI-CIE, nominated by RIEDC Business Development Manager, Katharine Flynn, was cited for its support of local new ventures, its programming, which attracted 2700 visitors during its first year in operation, and for its collaboration with and support of other state organizations working to strengthen innovation and entrepreneurship in Rhode Island.

Congratulations Change Accelerator graduates!
Eight new social ventures make up the first graduating class of the Social Enterprise Rhode Island (SERI) Change Accelerator incubator program directed by Kelly Ramirez. On Wednesday, June 30, the group celebrated their accomplishment with state leaders and other members of the community during their final event held at RI-CIE, which served as the headquarters for the program. Congratulations to Bakodo!

Bakodo, a new venture led by Andres Douglas and currently headquartered within RI-CIE, recently was notified that their barcode scanner application was accepted into the Apple Store.
Bakodo Scanner is a real-time barcode scanner for the iPhone. Using computer vision and machine learning techniques, it uses the images captured from the camera to detect barcodes. Once a barcode has been detected, Bakodo Scanner searches for the product identified by the barcode number throughout an increasing number of databases and returns all types of information to the iPhone user. The information may include prices, reviews, nutritional information, local availability, ingredients, recipes, etc.

RI-CIE Incubator Welcomes First Ventures:
On June 1, 2010, RI-CIE welcomed approximately 9 new ventures into its new Incubator space also located at Davol Square. The Incubator model offers advantageously priced office space in the newly coined Providence "Knowledge District" to young ventures in the technology, design and bioscience fields for periods ranging from 3 months to a year through the RI-CIE application process.
The first inhabitants of the Incubator are participants in the Betaspring 2010 "BootCamp", a 12-week start-up accelerator program for technology and design entrepreneurs. Betaspring is a Providence-based mentor program and partner to RI-CIE.
RI-CIE Hosts Social Enterprise Rhode Island CHANGE Workshops:
CHANGE is in the air at RI-CIE thanks to Kelly Ramirez. Kelly is the Executive Director of Social Venture Partners of Rhode Island (SVPRI) and is leading the SVPRI Initiative, Social Enterprise Rhode Island (SERI), which is committed to creating an engaged social innovation community in Rhode Island. Part of the SERI mission revolves around a CHANGE accelerator program providing needed business support to social entrepreneurs in the process of developing innovative solutions to unmet social needs. Through the CHANGE Accelerator, entrepreneurs have access to meeting space at RI-CIE, as well as expert advice through a board of advisors.

RI-CIE will continue its popular Office Hours over the summer with a reduced schedule.
Schedule: each date listed, from 2:45 to 5PM, at RI-CIE
- Appointments will be coordinated via email (please email Sue Gallogly to schedule a time slot)
